Art Classes--"Art Around the World"

It's so exciting to finally have a dedicated classroom space in my home where students of all ages can come try new things! Years ago, I taught art after school, but for the past few years, limited studio space kept my classes down to just 3–4 students. Now, I can comfortably fit 10—though I still prefer 6 or fewer. Small class sizes allow for so much more one-on-one attention (or maybe I'm just getting older!).

I am truly blessed with the sweetest kids. They were all a little nervous during their first lesson, but it didn't take long for everyone to get into the swing of things.

Our lesson centered around a story about a little girl named Tina who wanted to go on a big adventure. Her family had a massive surprise for her in the morning: she woke up to find herself flying high in a hot-air balloon! As she drifted through a rainbow, everything began to glow with vibrant colors.

Here is how each age group brought the adventure to life:

K4–1st Grade: The youngest artists reviewed rainbow color order while coloring their balloons. I took photos of each student so they could place themselves right inside the basket! They glued on the ropes and baskets, and those who were able cut out their balloons so I could hang them from the classroom ceiling.
Elementary & Middle School: The older group drew their hot-air balloons step-by-step with me. Afterwards, they selected their own palette across different mediums—watercolor crayons, Posca markers, colored pencils, and more—giving them a chance to experiment with new tools.
High School: The high school students also drew hot-air balloons, but focused on detailed patterning and shading techniques to give their artwork a 3D effect.

An east wind has caught our big balloon and is pushing tiny Tina toward Mexico—but first, we’re off to visit the sunflower fields of Kansas and spot the bison in Oklahoma!
