This collage of found objects plays on the word close. We are a close family—but that also comes with plenty of familiar reminders like “Close the door!” and “Stay close by!”
The paper scrap at the center is cut from a leftover piece of one of my linocuts. In the original print, it was a cupboard handle, and here it becomes the starting point for the entire collage. It’s layered over glass tiles, a nod to the everyday materials found in a home’s kitchen or bathroom.
The key, hammer, and nails hint at the idea of house and home. The dump truck is a sweet reminder of when my boys were little and loved reading truck books on my lap. The “Best Day” words describe how I felt the day I gave birth to my twin boys—also represented by the hearts, arrows, and the Lego piece. The butterflies symbolize growth and transformation, a gentle acknowledgment that a new journey is beginning as my boys are no longer quite so close to home.
