Firsts in Drawing 1 Class--I drew a horse!

I’m pretty sure I just completed my first-ever drawing of a horse in Drawing 1 class a few weeks ago!

I’ve been encouraging my students to focus on forms and shapes rather than jumping straight into outlines. Every living creature is made up of layered organic forms, and learning to see those shapes is a huge part of drawing well. Sketching without fear—fear of mistakes, fear of imperfection, fear of failure—is essential to growing as an artist.

And I’m right there with them. My horse does look like a horse… but anyone familiar with horses will see a few proportions that are just a little off. Over the years I’ve learned that nothing in creative practice turns out “right” on the first try. The eyes see one thing, the hand attempts it, the eyes re-evaluate, the hand adjusts. It’s a beautiful back-and-forth.

So this is your encouragement today: keep drawing daily, keep showing up, and keep letting go of the fear. That’s how growth happens—and how joy in the process grows, too.

If you’d like to join my drawing class, I’d love to have you. Let’s connect so I can support your creative journey as well.
